![]() ![]() ![]() He leaves no stone unturned in his quest to discover the truth. Eric Ives has written the finest, most accurate study of Anne Boleyn we are ever likely to possess. Its great strength is its sophisticated understanding of aristocratic women's involvement in 16th-century politics, and precisely how this worked in practice.Ives rises effectively to the human drama of Anne Boleyn's life and in the process illuminates both the inner workings of the Tudor court and its relationship to the larger dramas of the Reformation and European politics." Jane Stevenson, Scotland on Sunday "The best full-length life of Anne Boleyn and a monument to investigative scholarship." David Starkey "Magnificently researched. His book represents a triumphant culmination of all that research, presented with clarity, wit and human sympathy." Diarmaid MacCulloch, The Telegraph "Ives has written an excellent book on Anne Boleyn. in solving the enigma of Boleyn in a narrative at once profoundly researched and lively." Antonia Fraser, The Sunday Times "Eric Ives, a scholar utterly at home in early Tudor politics, has been writing about the Boleyns for more than two decades. Ives's Boleyn, a portrait at all points supported by the evidence he gives, is clever, independent-minded and politically astute. ![]()

Skip this book if you’re only searching for the scary entries though. I feel like this could easily make a simple 90 minute movie for children or young adults. No scares or thrills but rather action and heart racing moments make up the book’s action. The real story involves trying to catch a mermaid. ![]() Early in the memoir, which reads more like poetic musings, Kang introduces the reader to the image that will repeat throughout the work, that her sister-born premature and dead within two hours in a remote village-had “a face as white as a crescent-moon rice cake.” ![]() The book’s focus on white originates from the little that Kang-the third child of her mother but the first to live beyond a few hours-knew of her onni, or older sister. Han Kang’s The White Book is a meditation on grief using a study of white objects in the author’s life to spark memories of events she did-and did not-experience, specifically the birth and deaths of her older sister (and a quickly mentioned older brother, who also succumbed to premature birth) and their mother. ![]() ![]() ![]() I think it was a unique view point as I haven’t read too many similar plotlines. Now, although it is a quick read, that does not diminish the fact that it is packed full of content and action! Glorious Day is an enjoyable, quick novella that you can definitely read in an afternoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are also many flashback scenes, including a substantial narrative set in the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. However, it should not be read as a direct account of Ware's personal life. Elements of the novel seem autobiographical, particularly in passages about Jimmy's estranged relationship with his father (Ware only met his father once in adulthood, during the period he was working on this book, and has remarked that his father's attempts at humor and casualness were not unlike those he'd already created for Jimmy's father in the book). The story explores themes of discontent and alienation, especially within families. Jimmy attempts to escape his unhappiness via an active imagination that sometimes gets him into awkward situations. ![]() Jimmy is an awkward and cheerless character with an overbearing mother and a very limited social life. The story, previously serialized in the pages of Ware's comic book " Acme Novelty Library" (and, previous to that, in the alternative Chicago weekly "New City"), is about Jimmy Corrigan, a meek and lonely man in his late thirties who meets his father for the first time in a Michigan town over Thanksgiving weekend.
